Top Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Have questions? We understand. Please review our top frequently asked questions below.
We work hard to provide a universally accessible option to all business owners, no matter their budget. We appreciate your time investment in our group and understand it already comes as an opportunity cost for your business. Networking is a critical cornerstone for local business owners and we want to make sure it is a mutually beneficial endeavor.
There are currently no monthly dues required of our members. That said, however, we do occasionally ask for nominal contributions to help cover individual costs of social events such as lunches out, potluck events, etc.
These events are not mandatory, but we don't want financial resources to limit participation. Don't hesitate to discuss alternative arrangements with the chapter president.
There are two types of memberships, a Facebook group member and an in-person group member who consistently attends meetings at one of our chapters.
Facebook Group Members: We allow for more industry overlap in our Facebook group as the requirements for initial approval and participation are not as involved. There is no exact number of businesses per industry. The limit is determined at the discretion of the group Admins.
In-Person Members: Each chapter holds one exclusive seat per industry for approved in-person group members who remain actively engaged and meet attendance guidelines. Examples include, but are not limited to, insurance, real estate, mortgage lending, financial advisor, roofer, etc. Guests in overlapping industries may be permitted to participate at the discretion of group leadership.
All Group Members Must:
- Reside and operate business primarily in the Greater Omaha Metro area
- Either have an ownership stake in a business, plan to soon start a business, or be responsible for growing their own local client base for a business that operates in the Omaha Metro
- Be respectful, exemplify professional core values, and actively participate
Individuals who do not clearly demonstrate that they meet these criteria will not be allowed to participate.
Note: Membership may be revoked at any time without prior warning or notice at the sole discretion of the leadership team and/or group admins.

In-Person Guests
SBOA offers several ways for members and guests to connect, learn, and build relationships. Participation can look different depending on your availability, goals, and level of involvement.
Recurring Chapter Meetings
These are the core of SBOA and are held in person by each chapter, typically every other week. Meetings are one hour in length and focus on:
Relationship-driven networking:
- Guided discussions or educational topics
- Collaboration and shared learning
- Some chapters offer optional informal networking time before or after meetings when space allows.
Quarterly Open House Events
Quarterly Open Houses are larger, more social events designed to:
- Welcome new faces
- Reconnect members across chapters
- Build community beyond regular meetings
- Provide opportunities to host vendor tables for sponsors
These events are open to a broader audience and are not restricted by industry seats.
Virtual Co-Working Sessions
Virtual co-working provides a “body-doubling” style work session for those who want accountability and focused time. Sessions typically include:
- A short goal-setting introduction
- Independent work time
- A brief accountability wrap-up
These sessions are open to Facebook group members and guests, with advance registration requested.
Educational Seminars & Workshops
SBOA occasionally hosts educational events led by members or trusted professionals. These sessions may focus on business strategy, marketing, technology, leadership, or other topics relevant to small business owners.
Social & Recreational Events
From casual meetups to family-friendly gatherings, SBOA hosts occasional social events to strengthen relationships outside of structured networking. These are typically low-cost, optional, and designed to be inclusive.
Volunteer Opportunities
We believe in giving back to our community and do our best to host volunteer events where we can actively serve together. Anyone is welcome to attend these events, unless specific age restrictions are provided in the event details.
One-to-One Meetings
SBOA strongly encourages one-to-one meetings between members outside of regular events. These conversations help deepen trust, clarify how members can support each other, and build meaningful long-term relationships.
SBOA meetings and events are open to local small business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals who serve the Greater Omaha Metro area. Guests do not need to be members to attend and are welcome to visit a chapter to see if the group is a good fit.
No. There are no required fees, dues, or purchases to attend a regular chapter meeting or open house event as either a visitor or member.
For certain educational workshops or quarterly events with food, we may ask for a small contribution to help fund the event. Details will be clearly outlined, if so, in the event sign up.
Advanced registration is strongly encouraged when available, as it helps chapter leaders plan and welcome guests appropriately. You can register by signing up online here.
That said, walk-ins are generally welcome when space allows. If you’re unsure, you may also contact a chapter leader or email [email protected].
Guests are typically welcome to attend two or three meetings per chapter before deciding whether to pursue in-person membership. Additional visits may be approved at the discretion of the Chapter President.
There are not limits to attending quarterly or other supplemental events.
SBOA chapters typically maintain one approved in-person seat per industry. If your business overlaps with an existing chapter member, your visit may be reviewed by the Chapter President before confirmation. This helps ensure a balanced, collaborative environment while still allowing guests to participate.
SBOA chapter meetings are relationship-driven and welcoming. Meetings generally include:
- Open networking and introductions
- Group discussion or educational segments
- Opportunities to share what you do and what you’re looking for
There are no forced pitches or high-pressure sales expectations. We usually do not have food or drink provided except for special occasions, but there may be options available for purchase, depending on the meeting venue.
Guests are expected to:
- Be respectful and professional
- Participate constructively
- Honor confidentiality of information shared
- Follow SBOA’s Code of Conduct
SBOA maintains a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or discriminatory behavior.
Business cards are helpful but optional. Come ready to introduce yourself, listen, and engage in meaningful conversation. Some people may choose to bring a notebook or laptop to take notes with, as desired.
Chapter Membership
An SBOA chapter is a local, in-person networking group that meets on a consistent schedule and is facilitated by a Chapter President. Each chapter operates with its own leadership style and meeting nuances, while following the shared guidelines and values of the Small Business Owners’ Alliance. Some chapters may assign a Vice President or other support roles such as a Social Media Coordinator or Guest Ambassador, as needed.
Our goal for each chapter is to have 10-15 members in regular attendance, but we don't have an official limit.
Most SBOA chapters meet every other week for one hour. Some chapters also offer optional informal networking time before or after the scheduled meeting, depending on the location.
Chapter meetings are designed to balance connection and value.
Meetings may include:
- Structured introductions and open networking
- Guided discussions or educational topics
- Occasional guest or member-led presentations
- Collaboration, questions, and shared learning
Each chapter President is responsible for ensuring meetings are engaging, respectful, and aligned with SBOA’s mission.
Chapter members are individuals who consistently attend and actively participate in one specific chapter. In-person members are more deeply involved in the group and help contribute to its culture, energy, and success. We also offer a complimentary directory listing for our members.
To reduce direct competition and encourage collaboration, each chapter typically holds one approved seat per industry for in-person members. This allows members to confidently build relationships without competing for the same referrals within their chapter.
Industry seats may include (but are not limited to): insurance, real estate, mortgage lending, financial services, legal, trades, and professional services.
Yes, in some cases. Guests in overlapping industries may attend meetings at the discretion of the Chapter President, especially if they are exploring membership, visiting temporarily, or if there is an open seat.
Members are usually encouraged to commit to one primary chapter to build strong relationships. Attending other chapters or events may be allowed on an occasional basis with communication and approval from leadership. For less competitive industries, dual chapter membership may be allowed.
Each chapter is led by a Chapter President, supported by additional volunteer leadership roles as needed. Chapter leaders are responsible for meeting facilitation, guest coordination, communication, and maintaining a welcoming environment.
To become an in-person member, please:
1. Visit a chapter meeting, you can schedule using the calendar link here
2. Meet with the chapter president and at least one other group member one-on-one
3. Provide your headshot, logo, bio, and contact information in this application for approval and creation of your free SBOA website listing.
Our Group Culture
SBOA is a relationship-driven community built on trust, respect, and collaboration. Our goal is to create a professional environment where members feel safe sharing ideas, challenges, and opportunities while building genuine connections. We strive to uplift and support one another personally and professionally.
No. While members are encouraged to share about their businesses, SBOA is not a high-pressure sales environment. The focus is on long-term relationships, mutual support, and meaningful referrals—not transactional pitching. When members do present in chapter meetings, it is required that they follow the 80/20 rule where at least 80% of the presentation provides an educational benefit for the other attendees.
All participants are expected to:
- Treat others with professionalism and respect
- Participate constructively in meetings and events
- Listen openly and engage in good faith
- Support a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere
- Share referrals for member businesses, when appropriate
What is shared within SBOA stays within SBOA. Members and guests may share personal, financial, or business information during meetings or conversations. Respecting confidentiality is essential to maintaining trust within the group.
Yes. SBOA maintains a clear Code of Conduct and a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or discrimination of any kind. Disrespectful, aggressive, or exclusionary behavior will not be tolerated.
If an issue arises, members are encouraged to:
- Address concerns respectfully and privately when possible
- Reach out to a Chapter President or Leadership Committee if needed
Leadership will work to resolve issues fairly and in the best interest of the group.
Future Growth Opportunities
SBOA’s vision is to become a trusted, accessible networking community that grows through strong local hubs, meaningful relationships, and shared leadership—without losing the culture that makes it feel personal and supportive.
Yes. SBOA is intentionally designed to grow in a thoughtful, community-driven way. As interest increases, new chapters may be launched to better serve different locations, schedules, and business communities throughout the Greater Omaha Metro and beyond.
Outside of the Omaha metro, we are open to exploring opportunities in neighboring cities such as Council Bluffs, Bellevue, Bennington, Gretna, Lincoln, and beyond. Eventually, we hope to become a regional operation supporting other metro hubs throughout the Midwest.
New chapters are typically launched when there is:
- Consistent interest from local business owners in the area targeted
- A suitable meeting location that doesn't require a financial commitment
- At least one or more committed individual willing to help lead as a Chapter President
- Four to six tentative members to help establish the group and recruit others to join
Chapter launch and expansion is coordinated by the SBOA Group President to ensure alignment with the group’s mission, values, and standards.
Yes. All SBOA leadership roles are volunteer-based and filled by members who demonstrate consistency, professionalism, and a genuine desire to support the community.
Leadership opportunities may include:
- Chapter President or Vice President
- Guest Outreach or Communication support
- Event coordination
- Community outreach roles
Not every chapter requires every role, and responsibilities may evolve as chapters grow. Additional network wide roles may also be available, beyond an individual chapter.
If you’re interested in:
- Helping launch a new chapter
- Supporting existing chapter leadership
- Volunteering for events or initiatives
